
Introduction
ECIA, The European Council of Information
Associations, acts as the voice of the unified opinion and collective expertise
of the key European information and documentation associations to major governmental
and non-governmental bodies. The Council promotes the exchange of views between
the 15000 members of the associations and their 42000 contacts across the countries
of the European Union, and encourages the development of a pan-european approach
by the information and documentation professions of the needs of the information
society.
ECIA
- provides a unified representation
for the information and documentation professions before government, industry
and academia
- develops a greater awareness of
the benefits and advantages of using information effectively throughout Europe
- focuses on the value of information
as a key resource for economic development
- facilitates the development of
information policies and strategies
- helps overcome linguistic and
other impediments to the international use of information and documentation
- assists in the dissemination of
information about information within the EU
- will develop, by means of education
and training initiatives, the information and documentation management sector
throughout Europe
